a profile in political cowardice
Senator Barack Obama came to Florida with his message of hope and unity. His rhetoric means to free us from fear and the divisive political tone that's plagued the nation's capital.
"We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid. They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black? He's got a feisty wife," he said to cheers. "Ultimately, I think the American people recognize that old stuff hasn't moved us forward. That old stuff just divides us."Wait a second? That's not hope, that's cynicism. I thought "cynicism is a sorry kind of wisdom." I guess that was a different speech, a different crowd, and a different candidate.
The more I get to know Senator Obama the more I realize that's he's not an idealist. In some ways his candidacy has been defined by liberal idealism, but his actions the past four months reveal he's just a political opportunist. He says he'll pull out of Iraq, but I doubt he'll be in a rush to do that. He says he's opposed to NAFTA, but his economic advisers are all staunch free traders. Obama will likely govern from the middle except on the appointment of federal judges. President Clinton was a centrist but he appointed far Left judges.
If Obama is elected he will be faced with an ever growing energy crisis that he has no idea how to solve. A recent Rasmussen poll in Florida shows half of Democrats are in favor of offshore drilling for oil. The only problem with the energy crisis is that the solution is probably at least a decade away. Even if Obama adopted the right kind of policies it likely wouldn't help him politically unless the press cooperates. There is no doubt the press is in his back pocket, so if Obama lurches to the Right on energy and finishes the job in Iraq he could very well have a successful Presidency. Nope, it's not change and it's the status quo. The left will not care, they'll "feel better" and go right along despite the fact nothing has really changed. The looming fiscal crisis is still on the horizon. Make no mistake, a political opportunist only has one priority and that is self preservation.
