another profile in political cowardice

LaunchpadYesterday I wrote an outlook on what an Obama presidency might mean for the United States. Most of the change would be in perception and problems plaguing our Republic wouldn't be addressed. Unfortunately, the same can be said of a McCain administration. McCain isn't exactly an exceptional intellectual. He graduated 894th in a class of 899 at the Navel Academy in Annapolis and he wasn't a much better pilot. McCain lost four planes before the accident that ended landing him in a Vietnam prisoner camp. Everyone knows the rest. What makes McCain exceptional is his story. What he endured as a soldier for the United States is amazing. McCain is kind of like Launchpad McQuack. Everyone loves Launchpad. He might not be able for land a plane very well, but he's good people. Would President McQuack be successful?

McCainIf McCain is elected in November he will likely adopt a Democrat Congress. Unless something dramatic happens there is no possible way that the Democrats will cooperate with the President. In some ways McCain would already be seen as a lame duck. Having slain the press messiah in Obama the once labeled "Bush Maverick" would become the old guy who is basically an extension of the Bush administration. McCain would need something to happen to change the political landscape because it's not in the interest of the Democrats to help. If McCain was able to get his message out and successfully label the Democrats as the problem it's possible the threat of a 2010 mid-term election backlash could help move some of his agenda. That scenario seems to be a long shot. If Obama isn't crippled by an election loss he would likely be the front runner in 2012. In fact his slogan of change would be even more attractive. Obama already has his own presidential seal, I'm sure we'll hear his comments about every issue.

There wouldn't be any meaningful change if McCain was elected. It's likely McCain's energy proposals would be passed. There's too much political pressure on the Democrats to keep stalling on that issue. McCain has faced long political odd before and bounced back. He shouldn't even be the Republican nominee after the immigration fiasco and now most people think he won't be elected President. If McCain wins in November maybe it's a mistake to keep doubting Launchpad McQuack. Either way, the match up in November is one true centrist in McCain and a want to be centrist in Obama.
